    Five dabs of mortar under a flag means it rocks within a year. We bed every flag on a full mortar mix — no exceptions.

    No falls

    Flat patios pool water against the house wall, eventually breaching the DPC. Every patio we build falls 1:60 away from the building.

    Driveways with no soakaway

    New impermeable driveways over 5m² need planning permission unless drainage is provided. We always include a soakaway or permeable surface.

    Walls without movement joints

    Long garden walls without expansion joints crack within 2–3 years. We build in joints every 6m.

      Flags, blocks, resin or decking laid to proper specification — full mortar bed, mechanical compaction or screw-fixed framing as appropriate.

      Joint, seal & snag

      Joints filled with brush-in mortar or kiln-dried sand, surface sealed if specified, full walk-through with you.

    Hard landscaping services and materials

    Material choice changes the look, the cost and the lifespan. Here's how we advise.

    Indian sandstone patios

    The Yorkshire favourite — natural variation, riven texture, 22mm thick. Bedded on full mortar over 150mm sub-base, jointed with brush-in polymeric.

    Porcelain paving

    20mm vitrified porcelain — zero water absorption, no algae, no sealing required. Premium option but lifetime maintenance-free.

    Block paved driveways

    Marshalls or Brett 50mm or 60mm blocks on 150mm MOT type-1 with edging restraint and kiln-dried sand joints. Permeable options available for SuDS compliance.

    Resin-bound driveways

    Permeable resin and stone surface laid over a porous tarmac base. Smooth finish, no loose stones, fully SuDS-compliant.

    Tarmac driveways

    Standard hot-rolled bitumen macadam on a full sub-base. Cost-effective for larger areas; impermeable so requires a soakaway.

    Garden walls

    Brick, natural stone or rendered blockwork. Concrete strip foundations to depth, movement joints every 6m, copings to shed water.

    Decking

    Hardwood (Iroko, Yellow Balau) or composite (Trex, Millboard). Built on screw-fixed adjustable pedestals or pressure-treated frames over weed membrane.

    Outdoor kitchens & pergolas

    Built-in BBQ areas, pergolas with retractable canopies, integrated lighting and power. Increasingly requested as garden 'extensions' to the home.
